Riverdale S1 | Ep 1 & 2 !

Hello everyone !

I don't know if you know this about me but I always watch something on the side when I'm blogging/studying/whatever. So when I was working on my « Rereading A Game of Thrones » post and realized I had nothing to watch, I remembered that Greg liked Riverdale and I thought I would give it a try.

I watched the first two episodes and I'm still not sure of whether I like it or not. Let's start with the beginning.

SYNOPSYS

The murder of a popular high school student coming from of powerful family turns the quiet town of Riverdale upside down. Oh and a new girl comes to town or as the show would put it « a new mysery rolled into town ».

Maybe some of you who are fan of the show will think « noooo this show is much more than that ! » and maybe it is but for now that's all I've seen of the plot.

I'm now going to point out what I thought about certain events so if you haven't watched the first two episodes, it's time for you to go.

Direct quotes are in italic, if they aren't it's just me paraphrasing.

EPISODE 1 & 2

Betty's failed confession

Betty has a huge crush on her best friend Archie and when she finally finds the courage to tell him, « the new mystery rolling into town » made her appearance and made Archie forgot his best friend's very existence.

You're going to think I'm awful but I found it funny. I mean, how unlucky can someone be ? They introduce themselves and Archie has eyes for Veronica only and Betty finally prefers to keep her feelings for herself.

Cheryl Doesn't Make Sense

So for now we have the nice girl, the girl who disturbs the force and guess who's left ? Yes, the mean girl !

I have mixed feelings about her. If my predictions are right, she'll turn out to be like Lydia from Teen Wolf and will become the popular, too honest though a bit shallow girl we can't help but love.

But for now, I'm disappointed. I don't understand her behavior and I'm not talking about her being mean. For instance, I don't understand why she agreed to take Veronica and Betty on the cheerleading team. If I were her and Veronica told me « you accept us both or I won't join the team » I would have shrugged and show her where the door is but Cheryl surprisingly agreed.

Another scene that made me cringe was when Betty asked her if she wanted to do a mani-pedi (because that's wht every high school girl does) and Cheryl answered « sure, I was going to ask you the same thing ! ».

Cheryl is the captain of the team and she comes from a very powerful family so why would she lie ? There is no point in doing so since everyone knows she is and it's not like she really wanted to bond with Betty. I know it's a detail but it bothered me.

Veronica/Betty's relationship

So let's imagine you have a huge crush on your best friend for a long time and that you tell the gorgeous new girl in town who genuinely seems to want to get along with you.

You'd expect she wouldn't try anything with your best friend, right ? It's in the friend code or whatever that you can't flirt with someone your friend has a crush on. It's common sense.

But Veronica can't resist for 7 minutes so what did Betty do ? She got upset and then she realized that it wasn't Veronica's fault that Archie didn't like her. I couldn't help but rolling my eyes. What about the friend code ? What's even more cringe worthy is that even though she knows it's not a good idea she keeps hanging out with Veronica and even with Cheryl.

Another student/teacher relationship

As if the one in Pretty Little Liars wasn't enough. Someone needs to explain this to me : Why is Archie swooning over Veronica if he has feelings for his teacher ?

At some point he tells his teacher « How you feel about me, is it real ? Because if it's not, I don't know what I'm protecting. »

My brain immediately translated it in : « Look, you need to have feelings for me or I'm going to tell everyone that we were together when we heard the gun shot. Love me love me say that you love me. »

Not needy at all.

So of course, the teacher said she had feelings for him, what else could she do ? We would all have said the same thing in that case !

I'm rubbing my temples right now because I don't understand why everyone thinks he's the good guy of the story.

Jughead

Is that an actual name ? At first I thought it wasn't but then he introduced himself and now I don't know.

To Sum Up …

- I don't like Archie 

- I don't understand any of them

- What's the plot ?

Now that I think about it, I don't like any of the characters except Betty's friend (I don't remember his name). But I didn't like when Veronica said « You're gay ! Let's be best friend » as if the only purpose of a gay man was to be the best friend of a popular girl.

I'm going to start the third episode now. Maybe it'll get better. Hopefully.
