Popular Books I didn't Like

Hello everyone !

Today I'm sharing my unpopular opinions. There are lots of popular books that I didn't like so I thought it'd be cool to tell you all about them.

The Mortal Instruments serie - Cassandra Clare : I wanted to understand why people loved this serie so much so I've read all of the books in the serie and The Infernal Devices (What can I say ? I was determined) but I didn't get it. I didn't like the characters, the plot, the writing... Nothing. It's one of those series that is just not for me. And that love triangle in the Infernal Devices serie ? The least I could say is that I wish I never read it (sorry if you liked it).

One of us is lying – Karen M. McManus : This book is my biggest disappointement of the year so far. The characters were complete clichés and heavy topics were handled poorly.

Full review here

Our Chemical Hearts - Krystal Sutherland : *sighs* where do I start with this one ? Boy meets a « broken » girl and becomes obsessed with her. (what is it with YA boys and their stalking habits ? It's not cool or nice or anything close to attractive. It's creepy.) This girl clearly has lots of issues but no one really does something about it. She's suffering and everyone lets her do her thing without trying to get her help.
Also, the romance is so unhealthy for both sides I couldn't help but cringe at times.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone - Laini Taylor : I tried to read it a few years ago and I liked the premise but the romance was just not for me. Once again, is it too much to ask for a male interest to not stalk the girl ? Watching her while she sleeps is also weird, I didn't like it at all.

The Crown's Game – Evelyn Skye : Two magicians. Only one spot. Who will win ? It sounds good right ? But that is until they actually meet each other and don't even try to fight. Oh there is also a love triangle in it.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children – Ransom Riggs : This book is so slow. I was intrigued so I kept reading but I couldn't get into it. Also, the romance is weird.

The Raven Boys serie – Maggie Stiefvater : I liked the first two books a lot. And then I tried to read Blue Lily Lily Blue and was bored out of my mind. I couldn't tell you exactly why as it was a long time ago but it really wasn't a good experience.

All the Bright Places – Jennifer Niven : Don't even make me start with this one. This is the last book anyone with depression should read. It is the worst representation of mental illness I've ever read. The author describes people taking medication as dull and basically lifeless. It's never refuted in the book that :
  1. People taking medication don't all react like that while taking them and if they do it usually doesn't last.
  2. Therapists/Counselors aren't all clueless.
  3. You can live with a mental illness.
And that ending ? Ugh. Really, really didn't like it.

What did you think of those books ?
Do you have an unpopular opinion ?

Hope you enjoyed, see you next time.

  1. I haven't read any of these books (except Miss Peregrine's Home! I'm sad it didn't work for you, it's been ages since I read it but I remember enjoying it) but All the Bright Places makes me really worried! We already have enough bad representations of mental illness in our society, the last thing we need is more!

  2. I've never really understood the stalker bad boy thing, wouldn't we hate that in real life?? IDK. And I did kinda like One Of Us Is Lying but I can see where you're coming from on the cliched characters.

    1. I'd definitely be worried if someone was stalking me. It's really not a good foundation for a healthy relationship.

  3. I didn't like the first or second book in The Mortal Instruments, but after that I started to enjoy it more. It's definitely a hard series to get into. I want to read Crown's Game, but I also think that I won't like it. I hate the idea that they don't even try to fight. And why a love triangle?? Really?

    1. We're opposites haha I kinda liked the first and second book but then it went downhill for me.

I don't know why authors do that, I forgot to mention that it's also super instalovey.

  4. Haha I know we disagree on many books (mortal instruments, daughter of smoke and bone ((though now that you mention it it probably was a creepy relationship I should reread it to see if I still like it)), and raven boys) but I'll probably stay away from the other books here because I'm trying to only read books I know I'll enjoy. Great post!
